Microteaching Community Language Learning
Today is the 7th of October of 2020. Today is a sunny and beautiful day, I know because I have drunk my cup of coffee on my little terrace and it has been an incredible charging battery moment.
The objectives of today are:
- ELT Approaches and methods: Humanistic method.
- Video analysis in groups (like yesterday)
I was very pleased because I truly liked yesterday's dynamic. So I called my friend and mate of the group, Ana Gonzalo Díaz, and these are our answers from the analysis:
- What are the roles of the teacher and the students in this method? The teacher's role is like an observer that guides the class through the interests and needs of the students. Their's role is highly protagonist, they lead the class and the teacher provides the information.
- What are the stages in the implementation of the method? Firstly, the teacher asks what they want to learn, the students answer and the teacher picks up one topic. Then, they propose what they want to know about the chosen topic and the teacher simply translates it. Once they have some information on the blackboard, they speak those words or sentences, and later, they record their voices to keep them and listen to it when they are reviewing.
- What are the main principles of this method? We think that the main principle is that the lesson is focused on the students, they lead the learning process and the topics. The role of the teacher is to accompany and help them.
- What are the advantages and disadvantages? The advantages: This method could be more attractive for the students because they can choose what they want to learn, and it can be mold to their needs. The disadvantages: It seems no dynamic, the student's role is kind of passive, even though they are choosing the lesson. Another disadvantage is that the students chose the topics to learn, the teacher can not assure the minimum knowledge to learn. Also, they do not think in the L2, because they only use the L1 and the teacher translates them into the L2. It is like the Grammar translation method.
- What techniques or strategies included in this method would you use as an EFL teacher? We would use the technique of asking our students what are their main interest to adjust the lesson to it. Also, the role of active and protagonist.
Once we have completed this task and discussed it with the whole group, we continue with the humanistic method. Today we have seen these fourth ones:
- Humanistic method: This one is characterized by learning by interacting with others. The teacher guides the lesson and is the only source of L2. This can turn into a monologue where the students only listen.
- Community language learning
- Audio-lingual method: The principal purpose is to learn how to use a language. Is a behaviorism method, based on stimulus and response. When a student answer correctly it is reinforced positively. You help the students to answer correctly if they are not going well.
- The silent way: The teacher does as little talking as possible because the students are going to be an active role. They become more autonomous. They correct each other. Pronounce and grammar is fundamental. For example, color cards. The teacher points out and pushes the students to answer, they become active.
